Als Symbol seines königlichen Wappens wählte Ludwig XIV die Sonne. Als absolutistischer Herrscher sah sich Ludwig als von Gott eingesetzt. Sein Wort war Gesetz. Als oberstes Staatsoberhaupt hatte er allumfassende und alleinige Macht. Er war König von Gottes Gnaden, von Gott eingesetzt und damit auch gleichzeitig unantastbar. Wie die Sonne war auch er der Mittelpunkt des Staates. So zumindest sah sich der König.
As the symbol of his royal coat of arms, Louis XIV chose the sun. As an absolutist ruler, Louis saw himself as appointed by God. His word was law. As the supreme head of state, he held complete and sole power. He was king by the grace of God, appointed by God, and thus also untouchable. Like the sun, he was the center of the state — or at least, that is how the king saw himself.
