Albin Zaininger wurde 1962 in Wels geboren. Nach Matura am neusprachlichen Gymnasium in Wels und Ableistung des Präsenzdienstes bei der Militärmusik OÖ. folgte ein Studium an der Universität „Mozarteum“ in Salzburg, das er 1988 erfolgreich abschloss.
Von 2015-2017 absolvierte er das berufsbegleitende Studium „Musikvermittlung – Musik im Kontext“ an der Anton Bruckner Privatuniversität Linz. Abschluss mit dem akademischen Grad „Master of Arts“.

Seit 1984 ist er als Pädagoge im oberösterreichischen Landesmusikschulwerk tätig. Darüber hinaus ist er Koordinator für „Komposition“ ebendort. Von 2000-2006 hatte er die Funktion eines Fachgruppenleiters für Schlaginstrumente im OÖ LMSW inne. Seit 2006 ist er Direktor der Landesmusikschulen Marchtrenk und Buchkirchen.

Er ist bzw. war Mitglied diverser Ensembles und Orchester (u.a. Talking Mallets, SBO–Ried, SBO–Sinfonietta, All Percussion, Trio Milonga, Österreich-Tschechisches Sinfonisches Blasorchester, Welser Sinfonieorchester). Einige Jahre leitete er die OÖ Big Band-Connection.
Er wirkte mit bei u.a. OÖ Brass Band, Sound–Inn–Brass, Juvavum Brass, Ensemble Aktuell, Ensemble Sonare.

Als Komponist schreibt er vor allem Auftragswerke für verschiedene Besetzungen und Genres. Seine Werke werden immer wieder als Pflichtstücke bei nationalen und internationalen Wettbewerben nominiert, z.B. „Up my alley“ (Testpiece European Brass Band Championships 2010), „Pictures of Percussion“ (Slowenien 2023), „Prima la musica“.
Diverse Fernseh-, Rundfunk- und Tonträgereinspielungen dokumentieren sein musikalisches Schaffen. Seine Tätigkeiten als Juror (u.a. Prima la Musica, European Brass Band Championships, Orchesterbewerbe) und Referent (u.a. OÖ Landesmusikschulwerk, OÖ Bläserakademie, Musikschulmanagement NÖ, Tiroler Landesmusikschulwerk, Musikschulwerk Steiermark, Südtiroler Musikschulwerk, Groovy Percussion Summer) und zahlreiche Workshops (u.a. Konzerthaus Wien, diverse Schulen) runden seine musikalischen Aktivitäten ab.

Er ist Preisträger diverser Kompositionswettbewerbe (u.a. „Max Brand- Kompositionspreis 2022, Balduin Sulzer-Kompositionspreis 2023).

Albin Zaininger (*1962, Wels) is an Austrian composer, percussionist, and music educator. He completed his secondary education at a modern languages Gymnasium in Wels and fulfilled his compulsory military service with the Upper Austrian Military Band. He subsequently pursued studies at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, graduating in 1988.

From 2015 to 2017, Zaininger undertook the part-time postgraduate program Music Mediation – Music in Context at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz, where he was awarded the academic degree of Master of Arts.

Since 1984, he has been active as a music educator within the Upper Austrian State Music School system. In addition to his teaching activities, he serves as coordinator for the subject of composition. Between 2000 and 2006, he held the position of head of the percussion department within the same institution. Since 2006, he has been director of the State Music Schools of Marchtrenk and Buchkirchen.

Zaininger has performed with numerous ensembles and orchestras, including Talking Mallets, SBO–Ried, SBO–Sinfonietta, All Percussion, Trio Milonga, the Austrian–Czech Symphonic Wind Orchestra, and the Wels Symphony Orchestra. He also directed the Upper Austrian Big Band Connection for several years and has collaborated with ensembles such as the Upper Austrian Brass Band, Sound–Inn–Brass, Juvavum Brass, Ensemble Aktuell, and Ensemble Sonare.

As a composer, Zaininger focuses primarily on commissioned works across a wide range of instrumental settings and genres. His compositions have repeatedly been selected as compulsory works for national and international competitions, including Up My Alley (European Brass Band Championships, 2010), Pictures of Percussion (Slovenia, 2023), and Prima la Musica. His artistic output is documented through numerous television, radio, and commercial recordings.

In addition to his compositional and pedagogical work, Zaininger is active as a juror at major competitions (including Prima la Musica and the European Brass Band Championships) and as a lecturer for various institutions, such as the Upper Austrian State Music School system, the Upper Austrian Wind Academy, Music School Management Lower Austria, the Tyrolean and Styrian State Music School systems, the South Tyrolean Music School system, and Groovy Percussion Summer. He has also conducted numerous workshops, including at the Vienna Konzerthaus and at educational institutions.

Zaininger is the recipient of several composition awards, including the Max Brand Composition Prize (2022) and the Balduin Sulzer Composition Prize (2023).
